On January 22, the first two episodes of the multi-part film Pansion in the Mansion (Pansija pilī) premiered at the Splendid Palace cinema.
The film is based on the popular novel Pansion in the Mansion (Pansija pilī) by writer Anšlavs Eglītis and depicts the events of one summer when poet Viktors Eglītis received a gift from the state in the 1920s: a dilapidated and vandalized 150-year-old manor house that had belonged to a German-Baltic baron.
"We are very happy that the film has finally met its audience! Anšlavs EgIītis has been an extremely good observer, and the nuances of how he is able to describe people, how he is able to reveal the essence of the book's characters in a few paragraphs, how benevolently ironic he is able to be in his descriptions, are what can appeal to and help even in these times when there are so many trials and negations. We really need it, and I hope that, just as the creative team had a lot of fun filming, it will also give the audience a lot of positive emotions," director Andis Mizīšs expresses his satisfaction.
“The film Pansion in the Mansion took more than a year to make, and involved outstanding actors from all of Latvia’s theaters and more than a hundred film industry professionals. Cinema is essentially a collective art form, and the making of Pansion in the Mansion was the most direct confirmation of this. We hope that viewers will appreciate the film, recognize the characters from the novel, or get to know them anew," says the film's producer, Inese Boka-Grūbe.
The multi-part film will consist of seven series directed by Andis Mizišs, Marta Elīna Martinsone, and Dāvis Sīmanis. Viewers will have the opportunity to follow the events of one summer, during which the famous writer Anšlavs Eglītis, together with his brother Vidvuds, his father Viktors, and his partner Hilda Vīka, begin renovating a manor house while also opening a guesthouse that becomes a meeting place for local residents, ghosts of the past, city guests, and the Latvian intellectual elite, as well as a stage for one summer in 1920s Latvia. The concluding eighth episode, a documentary series directed by Gints Grūbe, will tell the story of the fate of the Eglītis family and the historic Inciems Manor.
Several episodes of the series will be shown in cinemas in one screening: episodes 1 and 2 – from January 22; episodes 3 and 4 – from February 8; episodes 5, 6, and 7 – from February 22; Episode 8 of the documentary series will be shown in special screenings after February 22.
The events of Anšlavs Eglītis' novel Pansion in the Mansion take place in Inciems near Sigulda, but in the summer of 2023, during fifty days of filming, the characters and events of the novel Pansion in the Mansion were brought to life at Padure Manor near Kuldīga.
