The Latvian National Opera and Ballet begins the renovation of the engineering systems of the historic building and invites participation in an open competition for the development of a construction plan

Ministry of Culture

The Latvian National Opera and Ballet plans to renovate the engineering systems of the historic building – heating, electricity supply (including lighting), ventilation and climate control, as well as water supply networks – by the end of the 2026 season. For this purpose, EUR 4.5 million in funding from the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility has been earmarked for energy efficiency improvement measures.

“This is the next planned step to improve the working conditions of the employees of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, as well as the comfort of visitors. Unfortunately, during the reconstruction carried out in the 1990s, the historical engineering systems were not replaced, which has currently led to such deterioration that some of them are operating on the verge of an emergency. The renovation of the engineering systems will solve the problems of the building's temperature, air quality and microclimate, as well as significantly improve the energy efficiency of the historical building,” describes the planned works and the expected result, said Sandis Voldiņš, a member of the board of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet.

The first works are already underway – a historical and artistic study, as well as an open competition for the development of construction project documentation (feasibility study) has been announced. We invite applicants with appropriate qualifications who wish to participate in the renovation of a unique and large-scale cultural object – the Latvian National Opera, to familiarize themselves with the procurement documentation in the Electronic Procurement System and submit offers by September 19.
