Ministry of the Interior

The State Border Guard continues to strengthen the security of Latvia's border!

During the first half of 2026, within the framework of the European Union Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund Project No. VRS/AMIF/2025/2 "Strengthening the Reception and Return Capabilities of Detained Foreigners, Including Asylum Seekers (Phase 2)," the State Border Guard continued implementing measures to prevent irregular migration, enhance border security, and return individuals who lack a legal basis to reside in Latvia.

During the first half of 2026, the project accomplished the following:

  • Admitted and accommodated 548 detained foreign nationals;

  • Provided medical assistance to 11 individuals;

  • Organized and executed the forced return of 48 individuals.

Given the persistent hybrid threat on the Latvian–Belarusian border and ongoing risks of irregular migration, the State Border Guard continues to build its capacity to effectively safeguard the external border of Latvia and the European Union, ensure national security, and fulfill Latvia’s international obligations in the field of migration.

The project is implemented by the State Border Guard and co-financed by the European Union Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.
