Thanks to EU support, 20 Latvian firefighters-rescuers begin their mission in Portugal today

Ministry of the Interior

Today, July 16, General Ivars Nakurts, Deputy Chief of the State Fire and Rescue Service, saw off 20 SFRS officers with special service ranks as they set off for Portugal to provide assistance under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism during the high-risk wildfire season.

Representatives of the State Fire and Rescue Service team will remain in Portugal until July 31 and will be pre-positioned in the Almeirim and Trancoso regions. If necessary, the unit will be prepared to respond immediately to wildfire suppression operations.

Participation in international civil protection operations offers an opportunity to support Portuguese colleagues, strengthen cooperation with emergency services from other European Union Member States, and gain valuable practical experience working under complex conditions.

We wish our colleagues a safe journey, endurance, and every success in fulfilling their duties!
