Stronger together! How EU funding foster inter-institutional cooperation for border security

The State Border Guard College continues to make a vital contribution to strengthening national security by implementing Project No. VRK/RPVP/2025/3: “Strengthening the Cooperation and Training Capacity of Border Security Agencies in Latvia for the Effective Implementation of European Integrated Border Management.” The project is supported by the Border Management and Visa Instrument (2021 - 2027).

On April 24, 2026, the latest phase of the professional development program “Integrated Border Management” was successfully completed. The three-week training cycle, which combined intensive classroom sessions with interactive e-learning modules, enabled officials to deepen their understanding of the European Integrated Border Management (EIBM) strategy, its core components, and its practical implementation processes.

Upon concluding the program, participants engaged in working groups and strategic discussions, demonstrating their ability to critically evaluate existing security protocols. Furthermore, they provided well-founded proposals for the ongoing refinement of the strategy and its practical application along the external borders of Latvia and the European Union.

Under the framework of this project, several large-scale inter-institutional practical training sessions and simulations are planned for the remainder of the year. The primary objective is to test and enhance the functionality of European Integrated Border Management, ensuring seamless cooperation between various security institutions.

This project serves as an outstanding example of how the European Union’s vision of a secure and unified space manifests as high-level professionalism at our shared borders. Latvia takes great pride and responsibility in serving as a model for the EU’s eastern frontier, where EU funds represent more than just financial support—they are the foundation of our security, a driver of innovation, and a symbol of solidarity.

We are not merely constructing a border; we are building a smart, integrated, and formidable security system that safeguards the peace of every European citizen. Thanks to Europe’s strategic foresight, we are establishing security standards today that will serve for generations, proving that together, we are not only stronger—we are invincible.
