Strengthening cooperation among law enforcement agencies in the Baltic States and Poland with EU Internal Security Fund support

Thanks to the project "Strengthening Baltic Sea Region Law Enforcement Agencies to Combat New Cross-Border Threats", co-funded by the European Union Internal Security Fund, the enhancement of law enforcement cooperation continues. From September 9 to 10, 2026, officials from the State Police of Latvia participated in a meeting of representatives of the police and border guard authorities of the Baltic States and Poland in Lithuania. The Police Commissioner General of Lithuania, Arūnas Paulauskas, also attended the meeting. During the event, participants discussed the current situation in the region and opportunities to improve cross-border cooperation.

Meeting participants exchanged information on current trends along the borders of the Baltic States and Poland, including challenges posed by irregular migration. Given the rapidly changing situation, the importance of timely information exchange and coordinated law enforcement action in preventing cross-border threats was highlighted.

Special attention was paid to joint patrols and cross-border operations, including opportunities to improve the legal framework and practical procedures so that law enforcement officers can cooperate more effectively when necessary. Furthermore, the practical training of personnel for such situations must continue.

These activities took place during the implementation of project No. VP/IDF/2024/6 "Strengthening Baltic Sea Region Law Enforcement Agencies to Combat New Cross-Border Threats". The project is implemented within the framework of the Internal Security Fund 2021–2027 programming period, managing authority for which in Latvia is the Ministry of the Interior.
