Strategic investment in Latvia's security! The State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior highlights the future priorities of the Internal Security Academy and the role of the Internal Security Fund in establishing the training centre

Ministry of the Interior

This autumn marks three years since the Internal Security Academy began its work, and during this time, it has become a strategic investment in Latvia's security.

From the first intake of 343 students in 2023 to the present day, already more than 1,200 future police officers, investigators, and security specialists are studying in six programmes implemented by the University of Latvia, Rīga Stradiņš University, and the State Police College. A record number of students—491—were admitted in the 2025/2026 academic year.

Dimitrijs Trofimovs, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior and Chairman of the Internal Security Academy Strategic Supervisory Council: "As with any sector, the most important resource and value in the field of internal security are its people. The first students were admitted to the consortium programmes in 2023, and today we can already look back at the consortium's results. I am pleased with the record number of interested individuals who have shown interest in the Internal Security Academy's study programmes this academic year, choosing to pursue their personal and professional growth by working for the benefit of Latvia."

In the interview, D. Trofimovs reflects on the achievements of these three years—how the Internal Security Academy has helped strengthen Latvia's internal security—and outlines future priorities: the establishment of a new practical training centre with the support of the European Union's Internal Security Fund, the development of study programmes, and raising the prestige of the profession.
