SJSC “Latvijas dzelzceļš” (LDz) is launching the project “Implementation of Phase 1 of the FRMCS Class A radio communication system (CF 2021/2027)” to adapt railway communication infrastructure for the use of future technologies and unified management of railway communication systems in accordance with European Union standards.
The implementation of the FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) project will facilitate the development of communication infrastructure that complies with national and European Union sustainable mobility goals, thereby supporting the development of rail transport as an environmentally friendly alternative to other modes of transport, as well as improving infrastructure resilience, train speeds, and safety.
The FRMCS standard is a new, modern, and secure system that enables real-time communication with trains, infrastructure, and control centers. The system is based on 5G technology and will be deployed across the European Union within a specific frequency range to ensure seamless cross-border train operations.
The project will not only make a significant contribution to the modernization of Latvia’s railway communication infrastructure, but will also serve as a foundation for adapting it to next-generation technologies and innovations, optimizing costs, and promoting the development of LDz employees’ competencies.
To fully prepare for the implementation of the FRMCS standard in Latvia, LDz has already carried out the necessary measurements and started mobile network modeling together with SIA “Elektroniskie sakari”. Additionally, in cooperation with representatives of the information and communication technologies, electronic communications, education, and transport sectors, LDz will study cross-border interoperability of the system in order to ensure timely and effective deployment and use of this innovative system in Latvia’s railway network.
