Significant EU funds contribution to strengthening Latvia's civil protection - millions of euros for shelters, modern technologies and other activities

Ministry of the Interior

Today, on July 1, 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers reviewed the informative report submitted by the Ministry of Interior on the implementation of the State Civil Protection Plan in 2024.

The most significant work done in the field of civil protection:

  • 4710 state and municipal objects were surveyed and evaluated, of which more than 1600 objects were recognized as suitable for shelters. ~22.2 million euros in funding from ERDF resources has been approved, and a list of 570 objects that will receive this funding has been confirmed. Currently, municipalities can apply for funding and start adapting and equipping shelters;

  • the “112 Latvija” app was developed and put into public use, allowing access to information that is essential for preparing for a possible threat and mitigating the consequences of an incident. The 112 app also provides information about nearby shelters;

  • cell broadcasting has been introduced, allowing for prompt notification of residents about possible threats in a specific area;

  • new and modern disaster management centers have been handed over for service use;

  • more than 90 new specialized fire trucks and vehicles have been acquired, improving State Fire and Rescue Service's technical capabilities to respond to disasters. Currently, State Fire and Rescue Service's fleet has been completely renewed.

In fact, a large part of the overall civil protection system's funding and development projects in recent years has been provided directly with the support of EU funds, allowing for significant improvements that directly affect the safety of residents and the state's readiness to respond to crisis situations. These achievements clearly demonstrate the invaluable role of EU fund support in improving Latvia's civil protection system, making Latvia safer and more prepared for any challenges. Without this significant funding, many of these projects would not have been possible or their implementation would have been significantly delayed.

EU funds play a vital role in strengthening Latvia's internal security.
