The opinion of young people on transport and mobility matter. As part of its program “Different Mobility. Safer. More Convenient. Greener”, the Ministry of Transport surveyed 421 young people about their priorities for the future of public transport.

The results show that safety (20%) is the most important factor, followed by accessibility (16%), environmental sustainability (15%), and diverse mobility options (15%). Comfort (14%), speed (13%), and connectivity (7%) were also highlighted as important.

“It is encouraging to see young people actively engaging in discussions about the future of transport and mobility. Their views are important, as the younger generation are already active users of public transport and will continue to be future decision-makers and leaders in the sector. In the current geopolitical environment, safety in its broadest sense has become a key priority. This is also reflected in the survey results, where safety is closely linked to road safety and to people’s confidence in public transport as a reliable means of travelling safely and reaching their destination on time,” said Elīna Šimiņa-Neverovska, State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport.

The survey also confirms the increasing role of public transport in everyday mobility. Rail operator Vivi carried 21.3 million passengers in 2025, a 10% increase from the previous year, while people under 24 account for 25% of all train passengers.

The survey was conducted during activities organised under the Ministry of Transport’s programme of activities “Different Mobility. Safer. More Convenient. Greener” at the youth opportunities festival Kopums, the youth participation festival “ES.TU.MĒS.JAUNIEŠI.2026”, and the Car-Free Day event held in Liepāja as part of European Mobility Week. Visitors were invited to share their views on mobility priorities.

As part of the programme, festival participants had the opportunity to take part in a range of educational and interactive activities designed to raise awareness of safe and convenient everyday mobility.

The survey was conducted during youth and mobility events organised by the Ministry of Transport with support from EU funds.
