Safety and Infrastructure of the Rēzekne Left-Bank Protective Dyke D-1 Improved

Ministry of Agriculture

State Limited Liability Company “Ministry of Agriculture Real Estate” has renovated the Rēzekne left-bank protective dyke D-1, which forms part of the state land reclamation system in Rēzekne Municipality. The total length of the renovated dyke is nine kilometers. A total of EUR 900.4 thousand from the Recovery Fund and the state budget* has been invested in the renovation of the dyke.

This project is a significant investment in the safety of the region. The renovated dyke and improved road infrastructure will help protect the surrounding areas more effectively from flood risks and ensure the stability of the dyke.

Construction works began in April 2024. During the works, the protective dyke structure was upgraded and restored to its design parameters, the dyke maintenance road was renewed, municipal road surfaces and access ramps were improved, and the surrounding area was landscaped. These improvements not only ensure prompt access to land reclamation structures but also improve mobility conditions for local residents and farmers.

During the construction process, an economically efficient solution was found for the hydraulic structures. Although the initial plan provided for the dismantling of one sluice structure, a detailed technical inspection carried out during the works confirmed that the structure was still fully capable of performing its functions. A decision was therefore made not to dismantle it, but to carry out its full renovation, thereby preserving existing resources.

The dyke was built on the left bank of the Rēzekne watercourse of national importance and was commissioned in 1966. It also borders the Drabāki–Orenīši fishpond areas, and part of it is located within the Lubāna Wetland Nature Reserve. Two Category II municipal gravel roads have been built on the protective dyke.
