Ministry of the Interior

In Estonia, the representatives of the State Border Guard, together with an inspector from the Shipping Safety Inspection of the Maritime Administration of Latvia, conducted an initial inspection of the patrol vessel being delivered within the framework of the EU co-funded project.

During the initial vessel inspection, an assessment of the patrol vessel's actual condition was carried out, the technical documentation necessary for registering the patrol vessel in the Latvian Ship Register was checked, and further vessel preparation work was mutually coordinated.

As a result of the project implementation, the State Border Guard's maritime border surveillance capacity will be strengthened and the State Border Guard's detection, control, and response capabilities on the European Union's external border will be increased for the rapid and immediate prevention of existing and potential security threats and provocations.

The acquired patrol vessel will be invaluable in qualitatively and efficiently fulfilling the tasks assigned to the State Border Guard not only in the Baltic Sea region but will also provide support to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and other European Union member states in the Mediterranean region within the framework of Frontex-coordinated activities.

With the help of the project, the State Border Guard will significantly increase its ability to ensure higher maritime border surveillance standards and overall response capacity, which are necessary for the border surveillance of the European Union's external border and the ability to carry out operational activities in accordance with the European Integrated Border Management concept.

The project will contribute to the implementation of the EU's security strategy and protect fundamental rights and European values.

The project is implemented by the State Border Guard within the framework of the Financial Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy 2021-2027, the managing authority of which in Latvia is the Ministry of the Interior.
