The construction project of the new complex of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet (LNOB) stage arts set design workshop and rehearsal hall is moving closer to its final phase every day.
The assembly of load-bearing structures and the construction of the floor for all three buildings of the complex have now been completed, masonry work has been completed and the external heating network has been built. The assembly of the ventilated facade, the installation of elevators, the assembly of plasterboard partitions and the installation of Ecophon ceilings in the rehearsal and decoration halls are continuing. Landscaping works are also underway.
The aim of the project is to create a multifunctional cultural object accessible to the public – a complex of cultural spaces for the Latvian National Opera and Ballet and a set design workshop for the performing arts. The buildings will be used for storage, production and rehearsals of LNOB sets, while at the same time improving the surrounding area. In accordance with the vision of the architectural office "Krasts", a 6201 m2 multifunctional complex and a landscaped urban environment of 8792 m2 will be built within the project. Construction works, as well as revitalization and environmental improvement works are being implemented by SIA "Velve" (Ltd.).
“The new, multifunctional workshop and rehearsal spaces of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet will provide support and an opportunity for artists, set designers, as well as set and prop masters of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet to create and experiment, creating new, exciting performances. Our ability to creatively express ourselves, improve and provide audiences with an excellent artistic experience is directly related to infrastructure and workshops that meet modern requirements. The new workshops and rehearsal spaces are the first spaces built specifically for this purpose in the more than one hundred-year history of the Latvian National Opera and are not only physical infrastructure, but also a symbol of the development of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet with a future perspective,” says Sandis Voldiņš, member of the LNOB board.
Construction works are scheduled to be completed in 2024. For the implementation of the development project of the stage arts set design workshops and rehearsal hall complex, the Ministry of Culture has attracted funding from the European Regional Development Fund under the specific support objective 5.6.1. “Promoting the revitalization of the city of Riga by ensuring the effective socio-economic use of the territory” in the amount of more than 5 million euros and the state budget – 5.1 million euros, as well as co-financing in the amount of more than 800 thousand euros. The total cost of construction works is approximately 11 million euros.
