On October 1 and on October 2, the Latvian Firefighting Sport Championship "Toughest Firefighter" took place in Liepāja, bringing together firefighter-rescuers from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia to test their skills.
Over two days, participants demonstrated their strength, speed, endurance, and technical expertise across individual, tandem, and team disciplines.
The course comprises five physically and technically demanding stages: ascending a tower while carrying a hose pack, hauling a hose roll to the top platform, executing a force test by striking a sled with a hammer, dragging a pressurized water hose, and carrying a 90-kilogram mannequin to the finish line.
Competitors perform the entire course in full firefighter protective gear, with individual competitors also utilizing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to closely replicate operational conditions during structural fires.
The event was organized under the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027 project "Strengthening Firefighting Capacity in Klaipėda and Kurzeme Regions to Reduce Fires" (FireLess, LL-00275).
A event of this magnitude underscores the impact of EU support and cross-border cooperation. Through targeted EU funding and a shared commitment to European security, such initiatives bring neighboring emergency services together, foster international knowledge sharing, and enhance operational readiness. Long-term EU investments in safety infrastructure and personnel continue to build a cohesive, resilient, and fully prepared regional security framework.
