EU funding allows Latvia to strengthen its addiction prevention system

Ministry of the Interior

With European Union support, the Ministry of the Interior is introducing a new approach to addiction prevention. As part of the project, "Implementation of evidence-based drug use prevention programs and introduction of prevention quality standards," which will run until 2029 with €522,000 in funding (85% of which is EU funding), several key measures will be implemented.

A study will be conducted on whether drug prevention programs meet quality standards. The project will also provide training for local government, education, and police staff based on a program developed by the European Union Drugs Agency, to ensure effective and evidence-based prevention.

Special attention will be paid to elementary school students aged 6 to 11 by adapting and implementing the "Good Behavior Game" program. This is an evidence-based method for promoting positive behavior and developing teamwork skills. The "game" allows children to learn the principles of good conduct in an easy and engaging way, without requiring extra time from the curriculum.

It is very important for Latvia that the European Union supports these types of projects, as it provides access to the latest knowledge and best practices in addiction prevention. EU funding not only allows us to implement effective, evidence-based programs but also strengthens cooperation among the institutions and professionals involved. This support is essential for improving public health and safety, especially when working with children and youth, who represent the future generation.
