EU financial driving force! Patrol vessel will soon enhance State Border Guard's surveillance and response capabilities at sea

Ministry of the Interior

In September 2025, the preparatory work on the underwater part of the patrol vessel being supplied to the State Border Guard within the framework of the EU co-funded project was completed.

At the “Baltic Workboats” AS shipyard in Nasva (Estonia), the preparation work for the underwater hull section of the patrol vessel intended for the State Border Guard was finalized: the underwater part of the vessel received a special treatment and preparation for painting, and the hull was painted according to the State Border Guard’s colour scheme. The vessel has now been relaunched and work on the installation of navigation equipment, as well as work in the patrol vessel's interiors and on the deck, continues.

The implementation of the project will strengthen the State Border Guard's maritime border surveillance capacity and increase its detection, control, and response capabilities on the EU external border for the rapid and immediate prevention of existing and potential security threats and provocations.

The acquired patrol vessel will be an invaluable asset, helping the State Border Guard to perform its assigned tasks efficiently and effectively not only in the Baltic Sea region but also by providing support to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and other Mediterranean EU Member States within the framework of Frontex coordinated activities.

With the help of the project, the State Border Guard will significantly increase its ability to ensure higher maritime border surveillance standards and general response capacity, which are necessary for the border surveillance of the EU external border and the ability to carry out operational activities in accordance with the concept of European Integrated Border Management.

The project will contribute to the implementation of the EU security strategy and will protect fundamental rights and EU values.

The project is being implemented by the State Border Guard within the framework of the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Instrument (2021-2027), for which the Ministry of the Interior is the managing authority in Latvia.
