EU co-funding for security and convenience - more ABC gates and younger users at Riga Airport

Ministry of the Interior

By implementing an EU co-funded project, the automated border control system (ABC gate system) at Riga Airport was expanded in the arrival sector to 6 ABC gates, and the range of border crossers who can use the ABC gates in the arrival sector was also broadened: the age limit from which border crossers can already use the ABC gates in the arrival sector was reduced from 18 to 14 years.

The automated border control system can be used by persons who have reached the age of 14, are citizens of a European Union member state, a European Economic Area state, or the Swiss Confederation, and hold an electronic travel document (e-passport).

Since April 2024, the State Border Guard has been implementing a project within the framework of which the automated border control system at Riga Airport – the ABC gate system – is being modernised.

The project will contribute to the implementation of the EU Security Strategy and will protect fundamental rights and European values.

The project is being implemented by the State Border Guard within the framework of the Financial Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy 2021–2027, the managing authority of which in Latvia is the Ministry of the Interior.
