Daugavpils hosts the closing meeting of the Interreg cross-border project on peat fire management

Ministry of the Interior

Today, representatives of the Lithuanian Fire and Rescue Service arrived in Daugavpils to join officials from the State Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia for the project's final meeting. The objective of the meeting is to strengthen cross-border cooperation and enhance peat fire management and suppression efficiency in both Latvia and Lithuania.

Over the course of two days, participants will analyze the large-scale exercises recently held in Lithuania, share best practices, and discuss key operational challenges faced by firefighters when tackling peat fires—including logistics, on-site water supply, and international team coordination.

Special emphasis will be placed on evaluating existing peat fire suppression methodologies to identify gaps and necessary improvements. A significant outcome of this meeting will be the development of unified technical standards for the upcoming "Peat Fire Suppression Manual," which will serve as a practical support tool for firefighters in both Latvia and Lithuania.

About the program: The Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, aims to foster capacity building, people-to-people cooperation, and public awareness, while promoting green, resilient, and sustainable development.
