This autumn, Imanta Cultural Centre will host a series of creative workshops entitled “Creative Heritage”, inviting participants to explore and gain practical experience in traditional knowledge, skills and techniques. During the four sessions, participants will have the opportunity to get creative, draw inspiration from nature and the experience of previous generations, and discover cultural heritage from a contemporary perspective.
Workshop programme:
17 October at 12:00 – First session: “Sewing a Beaded Bracelet with a Needle”, led by Dace Cīrule
Sewing with beads is a relaxing and meditative process that allows small beads to be used to create both patterned bracelets and small practical items. During the session, participants will learn the basic principles of bead stitching, make a key ring or a bracelet sample, and have the opportunity to start making their own bracelet to finish at home.
25 October at 12:00 – Meet herbalist Līga Reitere and learn how to use medicinal plants for healing and in cooking
This creative workshop will offer an opportunity to discover wild medicinal plants and learn how to make simple, practical remedies from them at home. We will prepare plant extracts in oil, syrup and vodka, bath salts and shower scrubs, as well as hand cream and nail ointment. Participants will also learn how to make an immune-supporting powder and various herbal teas.
To conclude the workshop, we will focus on wellbeing and learn simple hand and facial massage techniques to help us relax and take care of ourselves.
1 November at 13:00 – Learn abstract painting techniques with Agnija Ģērmane
During this masterclass, we will experiment with various acrylic painting techniques that offer an engaging way to create abstract compositions and can also be used to refresh realistic or decorative depictions of nature. We will work with acrylic paints on paper.
14 November at 12:00 – “South Kurzeme Mitten Cuffs and Rucava Edgings”, led by Baiba Pilāne (prior knitting experience required)
Mittens knitted by master craftswomen in South Kurzeme have long been admired for their vivid colour combinations and rich ornamentation. Rucava edgings hold a special place among these decorative features. This distinctive and decorative cuff-knitting technique has traditionally been used to begin some of the most ornate mittens and socks.
During the masterclass, we will explore the variety of Kurzeme mitten cuffs, examine traditional patterns and learn, step by step, how to knit Rucava edgings and create different pattern variations.
This session is intended for knitters with prior experience.
All necessary materials will be provided.
Participation is free of charge, but advance registration is mandatory. Please register by emailing evita.kudule@riga.lv.
