Conservation and restoration work has begun on the second-floor rooms of Ventspils Livonian Order Castle, marking an important step towards the creation of a new exhibition. The work is being carried out as part of the project “Doors Open to the Past: Creating Accessible and Inclusive Museum Experiences at Ventspils Livonian Order Castle”.
The conservation and restoration work is being carried out by SIA “Pilsbūve” in accordance with the design prepared by SIA “Konvents” (design author Pēteris Blūms). The primary aim of the restoration is to preserve the castle’s historic fabric and authenticity while preparing the rooms for the new exhibition.
Alongside the restoration work, preparations for the exhibition are also continuing. Specialists from Ventspils Museum and the exhibition designers from SIA H2E met to examine and assess the collection items selected for the exhibition. They discussed how best to display the historical objects and how to make their stories understandable, engaging and accessible to today’s visitors.
The new exhibition will preserve the historical heritage while complementing it with modern interpretive, digital and interactive solutions. Special attention will be paid to children, young people, senior citizens and people with functional impairments to ensure that the castle’s history is accessible to as wide a range of visitors as possible.
The project is being implemented with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under Specific Support Objective 4.3.2, “Increasing the Role of Culture and Tourism in Economic Development, Social Inclusion and Social Innovation”, of the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme for 2021–2027.
Work on the castle’s second floor will continue. The historic rooms are gradually taking on a new appearance, while the stories they hold are being prepared for a new encounter with visitors.
The renewed exhibition on the second floor of Livonian Order Castle is expected to welcome visitors in early 2028, the centenary year of Ventspils Museum.
