Combating peat fires with Interreg support! The valuable results of the "PEATFIRE" project!

Ministry of the Interior

The Interreg project “PEATFIRE” (No. LL-00007) has been successfully concluded!

During the implementation of the project, significant steps were taken to strengthen environmental security and climate resilience in the Latgale and Šiauliai regions. In collaboration with partners, cross-border peat fire prevention and extinguishing methods were developed and improved, joint training sessions and experience-sharing visits were organized, guidelines were prepared, and the technical equipment of the rescue services was enhanced.

An equally important component of the project was public awareness. An information campaign was launched, and educational materials and videos were produced to promote understanding of peat fire risks, their prevention, and the correct actions to take during emergencies.

Thanks to the achievements made throughout the project, mutual cooperation and the rapid response readiness of the rescue services have been strengthened. Simultaneously, this has enhanced public safety, contributed to the preservation of peatland ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigated risks posed by climate change.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the project partners, experts, and involved institutions for their hard work, professional collaboration, and jointly achieved results. The work accomplished together will serve as an important foundation for a safer and more sustainable future.

All activities within the scope of the project are funded by the EU Interreg Latvia–Lithuania Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2021–2027.
