The Ministry of Welfare

The online knowledge competition for secondary school students, “Grand EuroQuiz”, organised by the Latvian Ministry of Welfare for the sixth consecutive year, has once again concluded successfully, becoming a well-established tradition. This year, the competition attracted a record number of participants – 179 classes from 85 general and vocational education institutions across Latvia.

During the competition, students tested and expanded their knowledge about the European Union (EU), its values, the welfare sector, and the contribution of EU funds to strengthening welfare and equality. The overall winners and most knowledgeable class in Latvia were recognised as Grade 11.a of Zenta Mauriņa Grobiņa Secondary School, who also won the Kurzeme regional category. The winners in Vidzeme were the combined Grade 11 class of Salacgrīva Secondary School, in Latgale – Grade 10 of Viļaka Secondary School, in Zemgale – the Grade 11 Social Sciences class of Jelgava Spīdola State Gymnasium, in Sēlija – the 2.m course of Jēkabpils Technology Technical School, and in Riga – Grade 11.b of Riga Purvciems Secondary School.

“Participating in the quiz was much more than simply testing our knowledge — it became a genuine moment of togetherness and team-building for our class. In an engaging and exciting format, we not only learned something new, but also strengthened our cooperation skills. We are grateful to the organisers for this opportunity and especially appreciate the prize we received, which will allow us to create yet another meaningful shared experience for our class,” said Olga Frolova, class teacher of Grade 11.a at Zenta Mauriņa Grobiņa Secondary School, recognised as the most knowledgeable class overall.

The best-performing team in each region receives a cash prize worth EUR 500, which the class may use for a shared experience such as an excursion, event, or another activity of their choice. Meanwhile, the overall winners in Latvia receive a EUR 1,000 prize to cover the costs of a larger class team-building event, enabling them to realise more ambitious plans together.

“Grand EuroQuiz” is an online competition organised by the Ministry of Welfare, in which teams of students from Grades 10–11 and first- and second-year vocational education students participate under the guidance of a teacher, competing against other classes from across Latvia. To take part, participants only needed a computer with an internet connection.

Over the years, “Grand EuroQuiz” has become a valued tradition and a highly anticipated event for secondary school students throughout Latvia, offering an opportunity not only to test their knowledge together with classmates, but also to spend time in an exciting, educational and positive environment, strengthen team spirit, and compete for valuable prizes.
