Opening of the Renovated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

You are invited to attend the opening ceremony of the renovated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Children’s Clinical University Hospital on 28 October at 11:00 a.m. The improvements to the infrastructure and technology have been made possible through funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Leadership in neonatal healthcare is one of the 12 key strategic priorities outlined in the Children’s Hospital’s new Strategy for 2026–2030, reflecting a commitment to improving neonatal care throughout Latvia.

Each year, approximately 800 newborns receive treatment at the Neonatology Clinic of the Children’s Hospital, around 300 of whom are initially admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

This year, the Children’s Hospital Neonatology Clinic celebrates its 30th anniversary, marking another important milestone in the continued development of neonatal care in Latvia, particularly for premature babies and critically ill newborns.

Newborns and their parents spend extended periods in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, making it essential to provide an environment that supports the babies’ growth and recovery while giving parents peace of mind.

The renovated unit has been designed with particular attention to the importance of parental presence for premature babies. Six individual rooms have been created, allowing mothers to stay with their newborns around the clock. The unit also features rooms equipped with two or three care stations to accommodate the treatment needs of twins and triplets, as well as open-bay rooms for newborns receiving care under staff supervision only. Rest areas have also been provided. Approximately 1,000 m² of the unit has been renovated.

Modern infrastructure, information technology and state-of-the-art equipment are essential for ensuring high-quality medical treatment and care, while improving the well-being of patients, their families and hospital staff.

The project, “Development of Infrastructure to Promote Patient-Centred Care and Clinical Quality at the Children’s Clinical University Hospital”, was implemented from the third quarter of 2024 to the third quarter of 2026. As part of the project, the building housing the Sports Medicine Centre was also renovated.

The total project cost was EUR 3,155,455, of which 85% was financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The renovation of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit accounted for EUR 2,360,561, including EUR 2,006,477 in ERDF funding.
